Matt Harper
The son of a Qantas Flight Engineer, Matt Harper, grew up in the 70’s and 80’s listening to the great bands of the day like Supertramp, Dire Straits, The Police and Toto. Originally he trained to be an airline pilot but the love of music halted this. At the age of 15, he discovered the mighty Midnight Oil. Seeing the great Rob Hirst attack a drum kit and that giant of a front man running amuck on stage, changed a lot things. He bought his first drum kit about a year later and practiced every day learning every fill of every Oils song.
The first guitar came a year later, along with guitar and singing lessons. Having a piano in the family house helped too. The song writing started as soon as he could play 4 chords on a guitar. Shortly after leaving school, he started drumming and singing in his first band with school mates called “Planet” AKA “Box of Frogs”. This band hit the ground running and started playing gigs straight away doing sets of all Oils/Toto/Australian rock inspired original music written by all members of the band. He also played drums and sang with a number of other original acts as well during this time.
After Box of Frogs split up, Matt continued to drum with an already established Goth / Rock band known as “Zeitgeist” which had already recorded two albums. With Zeitgeist he recorded two albums, played countless gigs in Sydney and also toured Adelaide, Brisbane and Byron Bay. After Zeitgeist played their last gig, Matt took a break from the music business and started a family. He is now back playing in working cover bands and writing new original songs. He has just released his first “solo” album, “Mourning After” which he wrote, recorded himself and played most of the instruments on. Mourning After was a project that started back in 2001. He still occasionally collaborates with ex-members of Zeitgeist on songs and videos.
